Stanton’s sixth-inning sacrifice fly off Brusdar Graterol put the Yankees ahead 6-5, but the Dodgers rallied one last time in the eighth after Kiké Hernández singled off Kahnle leading off, Edman followed with an infield hit, and Smith walked on four pitches.
Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, Alex Verdugo’s RBI single chased Jack Flaherty in the second, and Giancarlo Stanton’s third-inning homer against Ryan Brasier built a 5-0 Yankees lead.
World series game
Beginning in 2017, home-field advantage in the World Series was awarded to the league champion team with the better regular-season win–loss record. If both league champions have the same record, the tie-breaker is a head-to-head record, and if that does not resolve it, the second tie-breaker is the best divisional record. This change became the last championship series in the three major North American professional sports leagues to be awarded home advantage from the teams with the better regular season record since the NBA Finals in basketball and the Stanley Cup Finals in ice hockey.
So now we have a game that’s not real baseball determining which league hosts Games 1, 2, 6, and 7 in the World Series. It’s not a game if pitchers throw one inning. It’s not a game if managers try to get everyone on a bloated roster into the game. It’s not a game if every franchise, no matter how wretched, has to put a player on the team … If the game is going to count, tell the managers to channel their inner Connie Mack and go for it.
^ *****: NBC was originally scheduled to televise the entire 1995 World Series; however, due to the cancellation of the 1994 Series (which had been slated for ABC, who last televised a World Series in 1989), coverage ended up being split between the two networks. Game 5 would be the last Major League Baseball game to be telecast by ABC (had there been a Game 7, ABC would’ve televised it) until the 2020 American League Wild Card Series game between Houston and Minnesota. This was the only World Series to be produced under the “Baseball Network” umbrella (a revenue sharing joint venture between Major League Baseball, ABC, and NBC). In July 1995, both networks announced that they would be pulling out of what was supposed to be a six-year-long venture. NBC would next cover the 1997 (NBC’s first entirely since 1988) and 1999 World Series over the course of a five-year-long contract, in which Fox would cover the World Series in even-numbered years (1996, 1998, and 2000).
“I broached the subject to NBC. They were skeptical and resistant. The World Series comes in the first 13 weeks of the new season for the TV networks. It is a time when they are trying to establish viewer habits. They didn’t want to interrupt their regular shows with a one-shot deal like the Series.
After 397 World Series games played in the afternoon, the first contested under the stars in the 68-year history of World Series finally did take place. It attracted 51,378 fans, with ticket prices ranging from $4 for outfield to $15 for box seats, to new Three Rivers Stadium – the largest crowd in Pittsburgh baseball history. Working in the broadcast booth for NBC were Curt Gowdy and Pittsburgh legend Bob Prince.
Game 6 world series
To help remind everyone what made that night so special, we asked 12 MLB.com staffers who were at Busch Stadium that night (as well as one who wasn’t) to share a memory of that legendary game on October 27, 2011. These are their memories.
2004: Red Sox over CardinalsAnother long title drought ended: After climbing out of a 3-0 hole in the ALCS against the Yankees — the only 3-0 comeback in AL/NL postseason history — the Red Sox made quick work of the Cardinals in the World Series to end the Curse of the Bambino.
Neither Davey Johnson nor John McNamara would manage in another World Series. Johnson stayed on with the Mets until 1990, leading them to another postseason berth in 1988 that ended with a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. He was fired early in the 1990 season. Johnson would later lead the Cincinnati Reds to the playoffs in 1995, then followed that with two more playoff runs with the Baltimore Orioles in 1996 and 1997. He finished his managerial career in 2013 with the Washington Nationals.
One team enters with a chance to clinch a World Series title, while the other battles to keep its season alive and force one of those winner-take-all Game 7s. Past Game 6 classics have etched into our collective memory the names of Hall of Famers who lived up to their superstar billing, and role players who had career-defining moments.
As for this year’s LCS competitors, the Rangers grabbed their first victory in two tries in a Game 7, dropping the Astros to 2-4. The D-backs won their only previous chance — beating the Yankees in a memorable Game 7 of the 2001 World Series — prior to winning Game 7 of the ’23 NLCS vs. the Phillies.
• Hall of Famers Willie Stargell (1979 World Series) and Max Carey (1925 World Series) are the only players to club at least three extra-base hits in a winner-take-all Game 7. Both did so to help deliver the Pirates a world championship.
